Which plug fits your car?
Four plugs, one question: what’s on your car? Here’s the short version.
NACS (Tesla)
The slim Tesla plug, now the North American standard. Teslas use it natively; most other brands are switching to it from 2025 models on, and older cars can use it with an adapter where the network allows.
CCS1
The fast-charging plug on most non-Tesla EVs sold in the US up to now: a J1772 with two big pins added underneath. If your car isn’t a Tesla, this is probably your DC fast plug.
J1772 (Level 2)
The everyday Level 2 plug at offices, hotels and parking garages. Almost every EV can use it (Teslas with the adapter in the frunk or glovebox). Think hours, not minutes.
CHAdeMO
The older Japanese fast-charging plug, used by the Nissan Leaf and a few others. It’s being phased out, so check before you rely on one.
The big networks
Most chargers belong to a network with its own app and pricing. “Non-networked” ones are usually plug-and-go.
