How prices work

About prices on Frunkery
Frunkery is a marketplace for electric and hybrid cars in the United States. Sellers set their own prices. We don’t set, check or guarantee any price shown on a listing, and we don’t handle the payment or the paperwork: you and the seller agree the sale directly.
All prices are in US dollars.
What the price on a listing means
The price is the seller’s asking price for the car. “OBO” (or best offer) means the seller is open to offers. “Firm” means they chose a fixed price. “Contact for price” means the seller hasn’t published one: ask them.
What the price usually leaves out
Unless the listing says otherwise, the asking price does not include:
- state and local sales or use tax;
- title and registration fees, and any plate or emissions fees your state charges;
- a dealer’s documentation fee or other dealer charges, when the seller is a dealer;
- shipping, if the car is being delivered to you.
These depend on where you live and register the car, so no listing can show them for every buyer. Your state’s DMV or tax agency publishes the current rates.
Buying from a dealer
Ask the dealer for the out-the-door price in writing, with every fee and add-on listed, before you travel or leave a deposit. The price a dealer advertises should be a price you can actually buy the car for; if it depends on a condition (financing with them, a trade-in, a rebate you may not qualify for), ask them to say so in writing.
Buying from a private seller
A private seller’s price is for the car as it stands. You pay any sales tax and the title and registration fees to your state when you register it, not to the seller. Before you pay, check that the seller’s name is on the title and whether there is a loan (a lien) to be paid off.
Payment estimates
Where a listing shows an estimated payment, it is an illustration worked out from the asking price and published average rates, with the assumptions shown beside it. It is not an offer of credit, and Frunkery is not a lender. Your own rate and terms come from the lender you choose.
Price changes and sold prices
Sellers can change their price at any time, and a listing shows the price as it is now. When a seller marks a car as sold they may add the price it sold for; that figure is reported by the seller and isn’t checked by us.
Something look wrong?
If a price looks misleading, or a seller asks for more than the listing showed without a reason, tell us at hello@frunkery.com with the listing link, or use “Report listing” on the page. See also our terms.
