Frequently asked questions about pre-purchase inspections & battery reports

What does a used EV inspection include?

Beyond the normal mechanical and body checks, look for a battery state-of-health reading, a diagnostic scan of the battery and charging systems, an AC charging test and ideally a DC fast-charging test, a check of the charge port and cables, and an underbody look at the battery enclosure.

How is battery health measured?

Inspectors read data from the battery management system with a diagnostic tool, and some use a third-party battery report service. Results are estimates, and methods differ between providers. Compare the result with the range the car shows at a full charge and with its original EPA rating.

What else should I check before buying?

Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls for open recalls, ask a brand dealer to confirm the remaining battery warranty, review a vehicle history report for accident and title records, and confirm the seller has a clear title in their name.

Who pays for a pre-purchase inspection?

Normally the buyer, because the inspector works for the buyer. A seller who is confident in the vehicle will usually agree to an inspection at a nearby shop. Be cautious if a seller refuses any independent inspection.
