What to check on a used electric SUV

Start with the VIN and the title

Check that the VIN on the dashboard and door jamb matches the title and the listing. Ask whether the title is clean, and run a vehicle history report before you travel. A VIN that does not match the paperwork is the fastest reason to walk away from a electric SUV.

Ask about battery health

The battery is the most valuable part of any electric SUV. Ask the seller for the displayed range at a full charge and compare it with the original rated range, ask how the car was usually charged, and request a battery health report if the manufacturer or a dealer can provide one.

Mileage, tires and service history

An EV has fewer moving parts than a gas car, but it is heavier and harder on tires and suspension. Ask for service records, check the odometer against them, look for even tire wear, and confirm that any open safety recalls have been completed.

Test the charging before you talk price

Plug the car in. Confirm it accepts a charge on a home or public Level 2 charger and, if you can, on a DC fast charger. Check which charge port it has, which cables and adapters are included, and whether the charge-port door and latch work properly.

Check the warranty and what is owing

Battery and drive-unit warranties are set by years and miles — ask the manufacturer whether the remaining cover transfers to a new owner. Confirm there is no lien on the title before any money moves, and never pay a deposit on a electric SUV you have not seen in person.
