Frequently asked questions about convertibles
Which electric convertibles have been sold in the US?
Examples include the smart fortwo electric drive cabriolet, the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore and the original Tesla Roadster, first sold in 2008. Numbers are small, so listings appear only occasionally.
Are roadsters and cabriolets listed here too?
Yes. Convertible, cabriolet and roadster describe open-top cars with small differences in seating and roof design. Federal VIN data records them under convertible/cabriolet or roadster, and Frunkery groups them all in this category.
Does driving with the top down reduce range?
Usually a little at highway speeds, because an open roof adds aerodynamic drag, and more if you also run the heater. The effect depends on the car and the speed. The EPA rating is measured with the roof closed.
What should I check on a used electric convertible?
In addition to the battery health report, remaining battery warranty and open recalls, operate the roof several times, check the seals for leaks and wear, and look for water marks in the cabin and trunk.
