Why do electric vehicles need a flatbed?
On most electric vehicles the motors are permanently connected to the wheels. Towing with driven wheels on the road can generate electricity and heat and may damage the drive unit. Follow the towing section of the owner manual, which for most models specifies a flatbed or wheel dollies.
What should I tell the tow company?
Say that the vehicle is electric, give the make and model, and tell them whether it can power on. That lets them send a flatbed and prepare for tow or transport mode. If the 12-volt battery is dead, the driver may need to power the car up before it will roll.
Can a tow truck charge my EV if I run out?
Some roadside providers offer mobile charging in some areas, but it is not universal. In most cases a depleted EV is carried on a flatbed to the nearest charger. Check what your roadside assistance plan covers.
Can I have a purchased EV shipped to me?
Yes. Vehicle transport companies move cars between states on open or enclosed carriers. Tell them it is an electric vehicle, as weight affects how they load, and leave enough charge for loading and unloading.
