SUVs & Crossovers buyer's guide

Start with how you drive, then pick the range

The EPA range figure is an estimate for mixed driving. Highway speeds, cold weather, roof boxes and towing all reduce it. Work out your longest regular day, add a comfortable margin, and check the official rating for the exact model year and trim at fueleconomy.gov before you compare listings.

Check the charge port before you fall for the car

US electric SUVs use either the NACS (SAE J3400) port or the CCS1 port for DC fast charging, and many brands are moving from CCS1 to NACS. Ask the seller which port the vehicle has, which adapters are included, and whether the home charging cable comes with the sale.

Ask for battery evidence on a used electric SUV

Ask for a recent battery health report or a photo of the displayed range at a full charge, and compare it with the original EPA rating. Confirm how much of the manufacturer battery warranty remains and whether it transfers to a new owner. Check open recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Frequently asked questions about suvs & crossovers

What is the difference between an electric SUV and an electric crossover?

In everyday US usage a crossover is an SUV-shaped vehicle built on a car-style unibody rather than a truck frame. Almost every electric SUV is unibody, so for electric vehicles the distinction makes little practical difference, and federal VIN data files most of them under one SUV class. Frunkery lists SUVs and crossovers together so you do not have to search twice.

How much range do I need in an electric SUV?

It depends on your daily miles and where you charge. If you can charge at home overnight, most daily driving is covered by a modest rated range. For frequent long highway trips, a higher EPA rating and faster DC charging matter more. Expect less than the rated figure in cold weather, at high speeds or when carrying a heavy load.

How do I check battery health on a used electric SUV?

Ask the seller for a battery health report from a dealer or an independent EV shop, or for a photo of the range shown at 100% charge. Compare that with the original EPA rating for that model year. Also confirm the remaining battery warranty; most manufacturers cover the battery for at least 8 years or 100,000 miles, but the terms vary by brand and model year.

Can an electric SUV tow a trailer?

Some can. The tow rating depends on the exact model, trim and equipment, so check the owner manual or the manufacturer specification for that vehicle rather than relying on the listing title. Towing reduces range substantially, so plan charging stops more conservatively when pulling a trailer.

Are there three-row electric SUVs?

Yes. Three-row battery-electric SUVs sold in the US include the Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 9, Rivian R1S, Tesla Model X, Volvo EX90, Cadillac Vistiq, Lucid Gravity and VinFast VF 9, with seating layouts that vary by trim. Check the seat count on the specific vehicle, because some trims swap the third row or second-row bench for other options.

Which charging connector does an electric SUV use?

It depends on the brand and model year. Tesla vehicles use NACS (SAE J3400). Most other electric SUVs built through the 2024 model year use J1772 for home charging and CCS1 for DC fast charging, and many brands are switching to NACS on newer models. Adapters exist for several combinations; ask the seller which port and adapters the vehicle has.
